Selection Process for World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program

The JJ/WBGSP follows this process to look over scholarship applications from people from developing countries that are qualified. The goal is to find the applicants who have the most potential to help their countries develop after they finish their graduate studies.

Two qualified assessors look over each eligible entry on their own and give it a score between 1 and 10 based on four main factors and how well they fit together:

  • Quality of Professional Experience (30% weight)
  • Quality of Professional Recommendations (30% weight)
  • Quality of Commitment to your Home Country (30% weight)
  • Quality of Education Background (10% weight)

To choose the winners, the JJ/WBGSP Secretariat looks at the average score of the two judges along with the following factors:

  • Maintaining a fairly even spread of awards across the country
  • Making sure that awards are fairly split between men and women; Unusual situations or hardships, when looking at work experience and other parts of an application;
  • Awarding scholarships to applicants who, all other things being similar, don’t have a lot of money to pay for their graduate studies abroad.
