The Legal Specialist is responsible for initiating and completing complex work in one or more areas of law at a high level of competence in support of attorneys and/or clients. The work product is self-directed and necessitates considerable independent judgment and discretion. It is necessary to have advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules, and regulations. The Legal Specialist leads and is regarded as an expert in one or more areas of law; educates and updates clients/departments on specific legal topics, and may take the lead on major projects and communications. This position’s Legal Specialist will have a primary focus on general health law and the management of adverse patient event investigations, as well as medical malpractice claims and litigation.
This is a telework position that may require intermittent time at one of our Mayo Clinic locations in Arizona, Florida, Rochester, Minnesota, or Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Individuals must live within a reasonable driving distance of one of the Mayo Clinic locations.

Candidates who meet the following educational requirements will be considered qualified: a four-year degree and a paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA)-approved paralegal educational program; or a J.D. A minimum of five years of relevant legal experience is required.
For the required experience, a J.D. degree may be substituted. A bachelor’s degree plus five years of relevant legal experience, including at least three years of senior-level paralegal experience, may be substituted for all of the previously mentioned requirements. Experience with risk management, dispute resolution, and litigation is strongly preferred. PACE (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam) completion, other professional designations (advanced certification in a specific practice area), or a Master’s degree are preferred. Completion of the Mayo Clinic Project Management Course or equivalent qualification is preferred.
