Young people who want to move across Canada but may not have enough money to do so may be able to work while doing so. The Working Holiday Visa is a type of visa that lets people work and use the money they make to travel.
What is the Working Holiday Visa?
The Working Holiday Visa is a Canadian work visa that lets young people (usually students) go to Canada to get a job and see some of the best places in the country while they work. This visa is part of the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, which lets young people work and travel, get an International Internship, or work in Canada as Young Professionals.
To be eligible for the International Experience Canada (IEC) and the Working Holiday Canada (WHC), your home country must have an exchange agreement with Canada for young workers, or you can call a Recognized Organization (RO). For a fee, these well-known groups help young people with their job applications and help them find jobs. Some recognized groups that help young people who want a Working Holiday Visa are:
- SWAP Working Holidays;
- GO International;
- Stepwest;
You can start the Working Holiday Canada process if your country has a deal with Canada or if you choose a RO. With this visa, you’ll get an “Open Work Permit,” which lets you go to Canada and look for work there. The visa is best if you want to move around Canada and work in different places and for different companies, but you don’t have a job offer yet.
With the Working Holiday Visa, you can stay in Canada for a year and then go back to where you came from. During this time, you can work for different companies and go anywhere in the country you want.

How to apply for the Canada Working Holiday Visa
The steps for applying for a Working Holiday Visa can take a while and are listed below.
Create your International Experience Canada Profile
To get into the application pool, you will need to send the following information to the Government of Canada:
- Make an account with the Government of Canada on their official website using your GCKey or bank information;
- Take the test to see if you’re eligible. It will ask you questions about
- Country of residence;
- Country of citizenship;
- Country of permanent residence;
- If you have a job offer;
- If you are a student;
- If the system decides that you are qualified for the IEC, it will take you to the page where you have to fill out your profile forms.
- Fill out the profile forms with your personal information, passport number, trip information, contact information, etc.
- Send in your information and see if the system says you can be considered for the working holiday visa.
You don’t have to finish your resume all at once, but you do have to finish it and send it in within 60 days of starting it.
Enter the pool of applicants
For each area of the International Experience Canada (IEC) Program, the Canadian government has a pool of applicants. After you finish your description, you can add yourself to the pool of applicants for which you qualify. In this case, you should put your name in the running for a Working Holiday Visa.
You may be eligible for more than one pool. For example, if you are eligible for both the Working Holiday Visa and the Young Professionals Visa, you can join both. But you can’t put your name in twice for the same group of candidates.
You will be in the candidate group for one season, which is one year. If the season is over and you don’t get an offer to apply, you’ll have to send your profile in again.
Get an invitation to apply
During one season, there are different times when the Canadian government picks people at random from a pool of applicants and asks them to apply. Here, you can see the timeline for the invitation rounds, the number of candidates in the pool, and your chances of being chosen.
If you get an offer, you’ll get a message about it on your account. Then you can decide whether to say yes or no. When you get an offer, you’ll have 10 days to decide whether or not to accept. If you say no, you will still be in the pool of candidates for the next round of invites.
If you are in more than one pool, you will have to turn down one offer to get the other. For example, if you are in the Young Professionals and Working Holiday pools and get an offer for the Young Professionals pool, you will have to turn it down so that you can be considered for the Working Holiday Visa.
If you say yes, you will have 20 days to fill out an application for a work pass.
Apply for a work permit
Since you only have 20 days to apply for a work permit, you need to get started right away. You will first need to fill out the appropriate forms with the information you gave when you submitted your profile.
For the Working Holiday work pass, there is a place where you will be asked about your job offer. You have to do these things.
- You must type “A999999” in the Offer of Employment Number box.
- Choose “No” when asked if your company has paid the “Employer Compliance Fee.”
- In the space for the employer’s address, write “Non-applicable – Working Holiday.”
After you fill out all the forms, the system will make a list of the supporting papers you need to send. This list is unique, but it could include the following:
Police Certificates – for every country where you’ve lived for more than six months since you turned 18. If you can’t get them all in 20 days, you’ll need to show proof that you’ve asked for them and be ready to show them to a Canadian Consulate official later. If you have been in trouble with the law before, you won’t be able to get a work pass.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume: This shows your education, skills, work history, present job, and where you work.
Medical Exam: You should see a doctor to get a certificate of good health if you are going to work in a job that needs it or if you have lived in countries that could be dangerous to your health. This form, IMM 1017B – Upfront Medical Report, is part of your application and must be uploaded. If you can’t get this form in the 20 days you have to send in your application, you can show that you are still waiting for the form by attaching proof.
Passport and Digital Photo: You must send in a clear copy of your passport that is good until the day you leave Canada. Also, you have to send in a digital picture of yourself that meets the requirements listed in the picture Requirements.
Submit other forms:
- IMM 5645 – Family Information;
- IMM 5707 – Family Information;
- Schedule 1 – Application for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside Canada.
If you are working with a Recognized Organization, you need to show that the RO is helping you with your Working Holiday in Canada.
Pay the Fees and Submit Application
For the Working Holiday Visa, you must pay CAD$100 for International Experience Canada and CAD$100 for Open Work Permit Holder. If you are asked to send in your biometrics, you will have to pay an extra CAD$85 biometrics fee.
Pay these fees, and then send in your work permit application. The Canadian government will look at your application and let you know if you are qualified or not. If you are, they will tell you what you need to do next. The Consulate may ask you to do an interview or give them more details. You must meet their standards or your application for a work permit will be turned down.
Get your PoE Letter and Travel to Canada
If your application is accepted, you will get a letter of recommendation or a Port of Entry (PoE) Letter to Canada. When you travel, you must always have that letter with you. You can now find a place to stay and book a flight to Canada. When you first come to Canada, you’ll need to bring these things with you:
- Your passport.
- Your PoE introduction letter.
- Proof that you have enough money (CAD$2,500) to live in Canada for the first three months.
- Proof that you have legal Canadian health insurance.
- A ticket from Canada back to your home country, or enough money to buy a ticket.
- Copies of the papers you used to apply for your work permit.
The Canadian Consulate decides how long your work pass is good for, but it’s usually for a year. When your work permit runs out, you must go back to your home country or you could be sent back.
