Our Dutch partner, KBB, a southern Netherlands-based agricultural company, is presently hiring workers to pack the harvested tomatoes.

As an employee of a tomato greenhouse, your availability to perform ad hoc tasks throughout the season may be requested. Typically, the employee will be responsible for placing tomato plants in sawdust sacks.

The packaging facilitates management by the consumer. Growing more than the stipulated number of tomatoes could lead to their rotting, which necessitates additional greenhouse labor. In addition, it is essential not to overfill the harvesting baskets, as the product may be damaged when the baskets are stacked on pallets and transported to the packing facility. Important handling precautions include lowering the height from which tomatoes are lowered into the harvest basket and timing the harvest for early morning when fruit temperatures are cooler than in the heat of the day.

The employee must additionally perform the following tasks:

  • The cultivation of plants
  • Transplanting plants while carefully handling them
  • Before harvesting, cultivate the plants and prune the tomatoes per the team leaders’ instructions.
  • Tomato picking during the harvest
  • Select and categorize the tomatoes based on their quality.

This is a difficult task, and you may be required to work longer shifts, similar to running on Saturdays.

If you work over 152 hours in four weeks, overtime will be compensated at a rate of 135%.

Talents

  • A few involvements in greenhouses, particularly in tomato packaging, “Bakken”, as how tomatoes are handled at harvest also affects the tomato’s market presentation.
  • Ability to work in environments with high temperatures (during the summer, the temperature in the greenhouse may exceed +30°C to allow the fruit to grow).
  • Enthusiastic and motivated employee, required to endure heat
  • Motivation to live for an extended period in the Netherlands requires that you are healthy and willing to perform physically taxing duties, as a few heavy and difficult tasks may also be required.
  • Possibility to remain in the Netherlands for a minimum of two years (no possibility of intermediate vacations), as all labor is required during harvest season.
