Eligibility Criteria
- attain a minimum age of eighteen years old by February 1st, the year the scholarship is to commence;
- possess the status of a citizen of one of the participating countries (as specified on the Australia Awards website) and be a resident of that country at the time of scholarship application;
- not hold permanent residency in Australia, be a citizen of Australia, or be applying for a visa to reside in Australia permanently;
- During the application, selection, and mobilization phases, applicants may not be married, engaged, or in a de facto relationship with an individual who possesses permanent residency, Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or is eligible to do so; this restriction does not apply to Cook Island, Niue, or Tokelau residents with New Zealand citizenship; however, they must submit an application for a Student visa [subclass 500] instead.
- not be in active-duty military service;
- Individuals who have not previously been granted a long-term Australia Award are ineligible to apply until they have completed an equivalent period away from Australia. For instance, a recipient who has already received an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years but has not lived abroad for eight years is ineligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship.
- possess the ability to fulfill any prerequisites imposed by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s home country (such as a minimum number of years of work experience in a relevant industry);
- be able to meet the admission requirements of the institution where the award is to be undertaken (this may require Program Areas to withdraw an offer of an award if the recipient is unable to meet the admission requirements of the institution). This may not become apparent until Program Areas submit placement requests to particular institutions.
- be capable of meeting all Department of Home Affairs requirements to obtain a Student Visa. This could potentially necessitate the Program Area to revoke an award offer if the recipient is unable to fulfill the visa prerequisites.
- Scholarship applications should not be submitted for courses of study at an academic level below the applicant’s current degree (e.g., a Master’s scholarship when the applicant already holds a Ph.D.); and
- Applicants are required to disclose any affiliations or relationships with personnel employed by Program Areas (including locally engaged staff at the post) or managing contractors to the Program Area to ensure that the application is managed transparently and effectively.
