Scholarships for International Students in the United States in 2023 | University of Minnesota: The United States provides international students with a wealth of higher-education opportunities that they will not find anywhere else in the world. Every year, the United States government provides fully or partially funded scholarships to international students.

Universities in the United States also welcome international students to study through scholarship programs such as the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program and the Fulbright Foreign Student Program.

The upcoming class scholarships have been officially announced by the University of Minnesota. It is regarded as one of the world’s top educational institutions. The International Student Scholarships at the University of Minnesota are available from 2023 to 2024. Students with an active, non-immigrant temporary visa status can now apply for International Student Scholarships at the University of Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota was founded as a college preparatory school in Minneapolis in 1851, seven years before Minnesota became a state. It struggled in its early years and relied on donations from donors such as South Carolina Governor William Aiken Jr. to stay open. It is currently operational in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. The University of Minnesota provides such scholarships on a yearly basis to welcome new students to campus. The International Student Scholarships will provide selected students with new and better opportunities as well as exposure to advanced learning in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs.

These scholarships are renewable annually if a 3.0 cumulative University of Minnesota (U of M) GPA and full-time undergraduate status are maintained. Eligibility Criteria:

We welcome applications from all newly admitted international undergraduate degree-seeking students

who meet the following criteria:

Students who are in an active, non-immigrant temporary visa status and are eligible for a tuition reduction or waiver are ineligible for these awards.
Students who have previously attended a college/university will be eligible for three years, while new high school students will be eligible for four years, subject to renewal criteria.
The items listed below constitute a complete first-year international application. Applications will not be considered until all of these items have been received.

Fee for Application
Submit your non-refundable $50 application fee. The application fee is not waived for international students. The fee can be paid online at the time of application or later online. Please keep in mind that your application will not be considered complete until the fee is paid.

Records from High/Secondary School
Students can use the Application Status Portal to upload all secondary (high school) records. For the application review process, unofficial copies are sufficient.

Evidence of English Proficiency

Applicants from Canada (English-speaking provinces), Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth Caribbean are exempt from the English language test requirement. If English is not your first or second language, we will accept the following tests and scores.

  • TOEFL: A minimum iBT score of 80 is required.
  • IELTS: A minimum Academic Test score of 6.5 is required.
  • Duolingo: A minimum English proficiency score of 105 is required.
  • Minimum in Cambridge (CAE) 180 on the C1 scale
  • Pearson: A minimum (PTE Academic) score of 55 is required.

Applicants who are otherwise eligible but not yet fully proficient may be admitted conditionally to UMD through its ELCI program. The ELCI Intensive English Program curriculum provides a direct exemption from UMD’s English proficiency requirements upon completion.

  • TOEFL: A score of 79 or lower is required.
  • IELTS: A score of 6.0 or lower is required.
  • Duolingo: A score of 100 or lower is required.
  • Cambridge: A score of 179 or lower is required.
  • Pearson: A score of 55 or lower is required.

Please keep in mind that test scores are considered official if they are sent directly from the testing agency to UMD (College Board, ACT, etc.)

  • UMD’s TOEFL test code is 6873.
  • UMD’s ACT test code is 2157.
  • UMD’s SAT test code is 6873.
  • In addition, the university will take the following factors into account when determining English proficiency:

A-level English, AP English, or IB English ACT (21 subscores in English and Reading)
SAT (540 Reading & Writing) (540 Reading & Writing)
Transfer coursework from a college or university in the United States worth at least 26 credits
Attended at least one full year of high school in the United States
