NDA courses are open to all unmarried male Indian citizens who meet the requisite age and educational requirements. At the time of application, applicants must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years old. In addition, they must possess a 10+2 education for the Army and a 10+2 education in physics and mathematics for the Air Force and Navy.

Candidates seeking admission to NDA courses must pass the NDA examination, which serves as the entrance exam. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts this examination twice a year. It consists of two written examinations: mathematics and general ability, followed by an intelligence and personality test.

Two sections comprise the NDA examination: mathematics and general ability. Included in the Mathematics section are algebra, matrices, trigonometry, analytical geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, differential equations, vector algebra, statistics, and probability.
The General Ability section is subdivided into English and General Knowledge subsections. The English portion of the examination evaluates grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension, and coherence. The General Knowledge section includes questions on physics, chemistry, general science, social studies, geography, and current events.

Candidates preparing for the NDA examination should familiarize themselves with the exam’s outline. Regular practice with the previous year’s question papers and practice exams can also be beneficial. In addition to academic preparation, physical fitness is essential; therefore, regular exercise and a healthy diet are advised. Participation in extracurricular activities can also be advantageous for the development of leadership and teamwork skills.

After passing the NDA exam, candidates are invited to an interview with the Services Selection Board (SSB), which consists of a series of psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interviews. Those who pass the SSB interview are subjected to a medical exam. Candidates who successfully complete all stages are admitted to the NDA for training.

The duration of the NDA course is three years. Cadets undergo rigorous training designed to develop their physical, academic, and leadership skills during this period. Cadets receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) upon successful completion of the three-year course and then proceed to their respective service academies for further pre-commission training.

Cadets are commissioned as officers in their respective services—the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, or Indian Navy—after successfully completing the NDA course and subsequent training at their respective service academies. They can anticipate a rewarding and challenging career in the armed forces while serving the nation.
